Random Thoughts…

On Ravelry they have these ads at the bottom of pages.  I like to check some of them out if they catch my eye.  Recently I’ve been seeing one for Knitting Out Loud and I just don’t get it.  Some of them I understand like the History of Knitting one, but ones with patterns?  Do they only read the chapter or two that aren’t patterns?  Do they read the patterns?  Why would I pay full price of the book for someone to read me one chapter of a book of patterns?  I just don’t get it.

In other Ravelry news, have I mentioned how much I love Ravelry?  I started a new shawl (still all Shalini’s fault) and it is all written out… all 153 rows.  Ugh.  But I found someone via Ravelry who charted it all out and is sharing it with the people who have already bought the pattern.  Yay!  I really like the finished product, but the pattern is pretty horrible.  If they insist on writting it out, the least they can do is put the number of stitches at the end of every row (it is a circular shawl), so I have some way of checking if I’m on track.

Also in Ravelry news, my partner in the Knit Picks dyed sock blank swap received my package today and loves it.  I forgot to take a picture, but she said she would get some tonight so I’ll see if I can link over to them later.

In camping news, the rain stopped just before I got home yesterday so I was able to get the tent up.  Everything I’ve read said it takes two people.  But I was able to do it all myself except for the rain fly.  With an interior height of 7’2″ (and me being 5’3″), I couldn’t get the fly over the *huge* tent.  But Scott helped me and it was no problem.  So, this looks promising.  Scott can entertain Henry while I put up the tent and then sweep in for the minute or so it takes to help me get the rain fly on.  It was also really easy to put up.  There weren’t that many poles (4 for the roof, 8 for the sides, 2 for the bay windows, and 1 for the rain fly) and they were all color coded.  I had fun.  Kind of like playing with a big erector set.

Back to knitting news, I seem to be the only person in the world who isn’t able to get a good ribbing with the Noro sock yarn.  I tried a flat swatch with 3×3 ribbing and it just wasn’t working.  Maybe it will work with a 2×2 ribbing, but this definitely isn’t the yarn for Kai-Mei.  I think I’ll either swap to America the Beautiful or something else from my stash.

  2. Re: Knitting Out Loud: yes, we don’t record patterns. We are interested in the stories of knitting. For instance, America Knits has fabulous interviews with people in the knitting world. Knitting Memories is a series of essays, by people like Clara Parkes of Knitters Review. We are interested in the literature of knitting, like Knit Lit, or chicken soup for the knitter’s soul.
