Progress in the Den
October 22, 2007 on 10:31 am | In Uncategorized | 3 CommentsSince the nursery is mostly finished, I went back to working on the den (I started working on that room some time earlier this year, can’t remember exactly when but definitely before Easter). But DH has a guy coming out to size our windows for plantation shutters and I really think the moulding around the window needs to be in place for that (we disagree on this point if you can’t tell). So on Saturday I sanded the two walls I already had primed and patched. And yesterday I started to paint.
As a reminder, the walls in the den had that tacky 70’s wood paneling which I tore off. Luckily there was drywall behind but it required a lot of repair work. First I had to seal and prime the walls (more sealing the torn drywall than priming). Then I patched up the torn spots to get a flat wall (more or less). I did the first coat of Jack O’ Lantern yesterday and I think it looks pretty good. I tried to take pictures this morning, but I didn’t realize until I got to work that I think I left the focus on manual (after cropping down you can’t tell how horrible the focus really is). I probably have a picture at home somewhere of the before walls with the wood paneling. But I haven’t looked yet. Until then you get where the walls are as of this morning (in various stages).
I think of this room as a bonus room. I think the plans orginially had this room as a one car garage (thus the door going outside which is a second door on the front porch). But because of the way our property is, we have a two car garage in the basement instead.
The moulding in the room is all dark wood (to go with the dark wood paneling). When the previous owners put new windows in the house, they did this room with fake wood vinyl instead of the white vinyl like the rest of the house. So, I decided to go bold (I keep telling DH that people will be able to see that we are not afraid of color!). Some people might think the orange would make the room look small and dark. But compared to the paneling that was there, it is bright and huge! Plus that double window faces South. I think after we get all the moulding back in place (even crown moulding), it will look great.
So far I’ve done all the work in this room by myself (DH did help haul away the panels after I tore them off the wall and moved the moulding downstairs).

I really like the pumpkin color. Once everything is said and done, I think it will look awesome.

I love this color! I’m not afraid of color either. And I don’t buy the ‘dark color makes a room look smaller’ theory. As long as it makes you happy, go for it!

Awesome! It’s looking fantastic!
I really don’t think that dark walls make rooms look smaller. Then again I have 2 red rooms, 2 green, purple, blue, and gold…
